Line-up

In this section we present the band member by member so you can recognize them on stage. The coaching staff which all  have very important functions regarding the band (training, cheering, keeping them alive - stuff like that) is presented on a seperate page.  Furthermore we pay tribute to the former glorious members of the All-Stars - now sadly gone to the Hell, Valhalla or where-ever they end up. Further down this page is a short introduction to all those guys we have signed to join the All-Stars at a later time, when open slots occur (and we have the money...).

But first we bring you the band - the Metalblade All-Stars

Satan From Hell aka. Johan Lindstrand

Background

Johan Lindstrand, nicknamed Satan from Hell because of his usual pissed-off angry attitude on stage (as seen on the pic), is the former frontman of the Swedish death/speed- thrash band The Crown. The Crown has never been known for their finesse in songwriting or their technical nusicianship - for them it's more about straightforward raw and primitive aggresion as evidenced by songs like Total Satan, 1999-Revolution 666, Blitzkrieg Witchcraft &  Death Metal Holocaust - all of this very much impersonated in Johan. He is therefore an excellent choice for the Minotaur position - admittedly he might not have the frame, but possesing the wrath of a god, a  ready-to-kill attitude and a lot of pent-up energy that will more than make up for it: Satan from Hell is a sure bargain for the All-Stars!

Frost

Background

Frost is one of the godfathers of black metal as he has been in the business for more than two decades playing in a lot of different bands. Long time skin-man in Satyricon and Gorgoroth his focus now is mainly on 1349 - Year of the Plague. Frost is an extremely skilled drummer with a an inhuman precision and force that has made more than one suspicious listener believe it is actually a drum-machine filling in. Furthermore pure evil radiates from this guy and his look alone should be enough to keep any but the most determined persons away. This will naturally make him a very good (and feared) centerpiece in the band and thus one of the Centigor positions go to him. His experience will be very welcome on the All-Stars and hopefully it can inspire some of the youngsters in the band and lead to even greater performances on stage.

Nattefrost

Background

If not the inventor of the corpsepaint, then at least Nattefrost has made very good use of it. Combined with his long pitch-black hair, the spikes on his bracers, the leather, the chains and of course the inverted cross Nattefrost is the true incarnation of the evil Norwegian black metal maniac. He has however taken his live performances a step further as he in a series of spectacular rituals fancies cutting himself with an immense dagger. Apart from the stunning effect on stage of open wounds and fresh blood running down his body, it also has the slight side-effect of exhausting him to the brink of fainting - which he actually sometimes does! However we put faith in our skilled apothecary to keep Nattefrost on his feet - a man with such determination, iron-will and disrespect for pain is an obvious choice for one of the two Centigor positions in the All-Stars.

Johan Hegg the Viking

Background

The frontman of viking-edged death metallers Amon Amarth - Johan Hegg has earned his tag over the years at numerous live appearances with his long beard, shaggy hair, his trusty drinking horn and his sheer physique. Of no small build he is destined for one of the Bestigor positions where he can take the battle to the opponents as he sees fit: It takes more than an average player to stop him as he spreads havoc in the enemy lines. As any true viking you can be sure to find Hegg in the center of the battle looking out for his next kill. We think Blood Bowl will suit him well - needless to say, so did he!

George Corpsegrinder

Background

George took on the name Corpse- grinder when  joining Cannibal Corpse in '94, leaving Monstrosity behind. Corpsegrinder (or Corpsie among friends) has done an excellent job ever since in this best-seller grind band (over 1 mio. albums so far), and it was only natural for the managerial staff to enlist him on the All-stars. Furthermore his one-of-a- kind physique makes him a sure choice for one of the Bestigor slots - just have a look on his neck: Broader than his head and thick as a bulls. So please don't give us this 'headbanging can cause serious neck damages' crap. Corpsegrinder is the living proof that headbanging simply makes your neck stronger!

John Tardy

Background

Exactly 20 years ago John Tardy formed Xecutioner - and unknown band with no demos out who later changed name and became the legendary Obituary. In the front rank of Floridas death metal wave in the late 80's and early 90's together with other famous bands like Morbid Angel, Death and Deicide, Obituary quickly earned their spurs. In a world where everything had to be fast and technical Obituary remained true to their own slow bone-grinding low-key style. Today no-one has done it better and Obituary is yet again laying everything to waste in the wake of their tours after a four year pause.

One can't mention Obituary without thinking of John Tardy's vocal. It is without doubt the most characteristical vocal in metal scene - neither because of its brutality nor its deep growls but because it is absolutely fucked up insane. The best description hitherto is this: Tardy's voice sounds like a sick lunger trying to recite the satanic bible while puking small furry animals. Personally he claims it takes "no effects, just weed'n'whiskey."

Alexi Leiho

Background

The only true metrosexual guy in metal, Alexi Leiho kicks ass on all those nu-metal upstarts in the business. As frontman and driving force in his own band Children of Bodom he will be a vast creative force in the All-Stars which is also why he got one of the few starting gor positions in the band. Alexi and CoB is also known to be a very inspiring live act, and it's not seldom that people crowd-surf and stage-dive in several layers both during and after the concerts (the impressive count is 5000 at their concert at Wacken Open Air last year!). On that behalf we also expect him to draw fans from near and far to support the All-Stars. All in all we are very happy that Alexi agreed to join the All-Stars and we have no doubts in the managerial staff that he will live up to our expectations.

Dr. Pymonte

Background

Germanys In Extremo belongs to the metalgenre called folkmetal and In Extremo has specialized in what they call medieval metal drawing influences from all kinds of bizarre instruments used in the middle ages of Europe. One of Dr. Pymontes good friends who happens to be a historian writes the main part of their lyrics to further add to the medieval atmosphere. In Extremo actually build most of their wierd instruments themselves (as the bag pipe on the picture) and on stage they look like they're on their way to a live-roleplay session. But hell - it's phenomonal music and the fans are crazy about it. And live they have a fireshow that makes even Rammstein look like children toying with matches.

Pete 'Commando' Sandoval

Background

Hailing from Tampa, Florida Pete Sandoval  is the drummer of Morbid Angel: Death metal superstars and godfathers of the Tampa & NY scene. His nickname Commando is well earned by the energy and precision he puts into his drumming at speeds where even the slightest mistake ruins the whole rythm section. His endurance and experience makes him an obvious choice for one of the few starting Gor positions. Furthermore his stability (over 20 years in the same band) will be a benefit for the All-Stars and make him a natural leader on the team.

Trollhorn

Background

Trollhorn is a relatively new frontman of the Finnish humpa metal band Finntroll. He joined less than a year ago when the former vocalist had to quit due to serious throat problems. His performance so far has, however, not let anyone down - with energy and the look of a troll he is the perfect center piece for Finntroll. Their equillibristic mix of heavy guitars,  rythms from death metal and the merry tunes of the humpa (a Finnish sort of polka) is something you simply have to expererience live to truly appreciate. There's not much doubt he'll fill a Gor postition - you can almost see his horns protrude from his forehead (if it wasn't for all the hair)

Hreidmarr

Background

Hreidmarr from French symphonic black metallers Anorexia Nervosa is a guy with an extremely big potential. Apart from writing most of the material for his band he is also trained and skilled in classical composing and structures. Thus he has taken the music of Anorexia Nervosa far beyond what anyone else has ever done before with black metal. Hreidmarr has shown the world that black metal is not just a Norwegian trademark and that the possibilities are unlimited: With the intricate mix of classical structures and instruments combined with the untamed sound, fast riffs and blastbeats of metal Hreidmarr takes the best of two worlds and creates something bigger than the parts. We hope the All-Stars is the place where he'll meet his true potential.

Nocturno Culto

Background

Nocturno Culto is a man that doesn't take no shit from nobody. Frontman in Darkthrone, and thus in the first wave of norwegian black metal, he is just getting meaner and meaner. This man is sure to draw blood in a midfield mélée (just take a look on the spikes around his neck) and obviously a perfect choice for one of the free gor starting positions - we wouldn't miss the opportunity to enroll him in the band. Luckily he wouldn't miss a confrontation with all those 'Christian believers' (ok - we might have deceived him slightly as to what this is actually about, but we guess he'll like the action just as well - and you know, a good manager has to motivate his staff, right! So as long as we tell him they're Christians Nocturno Culto's sure to loop into at frenzied rage).

Mauser

Background

Mauser of Polish death metallers Vader is a divine bass-player and an all important part of the insanely precise rythm section of the band. Vader was the first Polish band to gain a wider acceptance in the metal underground not the least because of their precision and professionalism. Thus they have cleared the path for many other Polish and east- european metal bands, marking out Poland on the metal-map. All in all Mauser is a big asset for the All-Stars with his pioneering spirit never giving up however bad the odds are, and we are proud also to have this part of metal-world represented in our band.

Athera

Background

Hailing from Norway Athera, frontman of the upcoming Norwegian thrash band Susperia, was more than happy to join the All-Stars, seeing it as a great honour. The managerial staff on the other hand is more than eager to bid this young and very talented vocalist welcome in the band. Our talent scout tells us he'll be on the top-five one-to-watch in short time. After listening to his very diverse and broad ranging vocal we have no doubts he will fill in his Ungor spot in the All-Stars to our full satisfaction. He is also known to be more or less doped on stage and so we also anticipate that he can supply the All-Stars of any drugs our apothecary can't get hold of...

Euronymous

Background

Euronymous was if not the founder of Norwegian Black Metal (and thus all black metal) then at least a great inspirer who pushed the borders and made it 'commonly' known. Widely acknowledged as the man who put Black Metal on the roadmap by bringing it out of the underground and onto the big stages. His band Mayhem has led a turbulent and truly bizarre life, with vocalist Dead commiting suicide by shooting his brains out under the curse that 'the world's not evil enough for me'. Euronymous, who found him, quickly called Hellhammer (the drummer of Mayhem) and together they shot some fotos, collected part of his skull (later to be wrought into an ornament) and according to rumours cooked pieces of his brain. Shortly after Euronymous met his untimely dead by the hand of the bass-player of Mayhem - Count Grishnakh. On the surface because of jealousy, it's suspected the murder was part of a struggle for power in the Inner Circle (or perhaps a dispute over whom burned which church, as some of the more bizarre rumours goes). This said, Euronymous' talents will be of good use on the All-Stars, and so we hired a very good 'Necrothecary', to get him back on his feet again to fill in as an Ungor.

Aron

Background

Another grand old man of metal Aron has been in the business more than 15 years all the time as headman of My Dying Bride. As the name implies those brits don't excel in merry tunes about happy times and the joy of life. Contrary to the most of the metalgenre My Dying Bride don't rely on brutal blastbeats and fast riffs but rather on creating a feeling of sorrow and dejection. Back in the early nineties this was an entirely different approach on the genre - yet no doubt still metal. Thus a totally new subgenre of metal was created and My Dying Bride became the founders of doom metal. Arons creativity and habit of always choosing new paths is very welcome on the All-Stars. Not really the 'into-the-pit-and-cause-some-trouble' average type of guy we have spared an Ungor position for Aron.

Bonus Material

aka. the eager guys waiting to join the line-up

Satyr

Background

From Norway comes Satyr of the black metal frontrunners Satyricon - first black metal band to sign a big label (Metalblade of course!). Thus Satyricon has cleared the way for many other norwegian black metal bands like Dimmu Borgir, Gorgoroth and others and pulled black metal out of the deep forests and transformed it into big business. It should be pretty obvious that a visionary guy  like this definitely has a place in an a band like the Metalblade All-Stars. Too bad he couldn't make it till the season kick-off. Satyr is off course entitled to either a bestigor, centigor or minotaur slot, so for now he just having fun back-stage...

Chris 'Keep it Brutal' Barnes

Background

Chris Barnes without doubt has one of the most brutal voices in the metal business. He started out as frontman in Cannibal Corpse where he took the band to hights of fame - then later started his own band Six Feet Under where he's growled for the last decade. Six Feet Under has a somewhat slower pace but this actually just stress the brutallity of his vocal. Chris Barnes is someone we just had to sign to the All-Stars: He has great experience from two metal super-bands, he has the abillity to change genre and still be in top ten and he sure takes no shit from no one. Having overcome the natural conflict interest with the Corpsegrinder they both agreed to play in the band together.

Dee Schneider

Background

Dee Schneider is the well-known and charismatic frontman of metal legends Twisted 'fucking' Sister. Hailing from England in the mid 80's Twisted Sister was in the middle of the New Wave Of British Metal (NWOBM). With tracks like 'I wanna rock', 'We're not gonna take it' and 'Burn in Hell' (which all made it to Headbangers Ballroom on MTV) their first album was an instant hit. One feel tempted to state that without Dee Schneider Twisted Sister would not exist - true or not Dee is for sure the most remarkable figure of the band and we have asked him to join the All-Stars. Always in for some fun he quickly agreed.

Fenriz

Background

Fenriz of Dark Funeral is one of the grand old men in black metal. He has simply been all around in numerous side project and other bands with an eagerness and creativity that has barely seen equals. This is the reason we want him on the Metalblade All-Stars and not as such because of his drumming abilities. His great effort and work behind the scenes is what really makes him valuable to us.

Mortiis

Background

Mortiis is yet another norwegian black metal guy - and then again - not just another guy. Vocalist of Emperor which is probably the most famous of black metal bands and one of the first to gain recognition outside of Scandinavia, he has been in the business even before it was business. As obvious from the picture he has developed the art of corpsepaint to a degree where people (albeit not the smarter ones) actually believe he is a troll, live in a cave in the mountains of Norway and only eats fresh raw meat!! Whereever he lives and what he eats we think he has a place in the All-Stars and so we signed him up.

Burton C. Bell

Background

The Dry Lung Vocal Martyr Burton C. Bell iss the frontman of Fear Factory. The band took the metal world by surprise when  in '92 their debut album 'Soul of a New Machine' shattered the beliefs of what metal was and how it was played and proved that new ways is always viable. Fear Factorys musical style would never have been an option had it not been for Burtons vocal. Technically intriguing changes in tempo and style is superbly accentuated by Bells ability to simultanously change his vocal - growls from the deepest pits of hell interchange with a crystal clear and crisp clean vocal and extreme high-pitched screams. Not many people in the world can take their voice over such a span with a snap of the fingers. A man with such abilities is a must for an all-star band - and so we hired The Dry Lung Vocal Martyr.

Peter Tägtgren

Background

Peter Tägtgren from Hypocrisy is one of the more interesting metal guys in Scandinavia. In '95 Hypocrisy decided to make a final album and call it quits - ironically enough that album became their great breakthrough not only in Europe but also in the states. So even though Hypocrisy continued Tägtgren started his own studio and has since then been one of the best studios in the Europe with bands from all over the world choosing his Abyss Studio for their recordings and mastering. No doubt this guy knows his business and besides he also joins other projects now and then e.g. his appearance on Swedish death metal allstars Bloodbath's 2nd album 'Nightmares made flesh'. Ohh - did we forgot to mention he also has one of the best and diverse vocals in death metal? Obviously this guy has lots of obligations so even though we wanted him fulltime for the All-Stars he only agreed to step in times of need. We are of course still trying to convince him to join fulltime.
